Ahern Named 2008 MS Corporate Achiever

OLD SAYBROOK, Conn. — The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Connecticut Chapter has named Michael F. Ahern, vice president with Utility Services for Northeast Utility Service Company, a 2008 MS Corporate Achiever — one of only 18 leaders within the Hartford region to be so named.

Ahern, MichaelA resident of Old Saybrook, Conn., Ahern received his Bachelor of Science degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Mass., in 1978, his Master of Science degree in 1981 and his Master of Business Administration in 1987 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Hartford, Conn. Ahern has served with the Northeast Utility Service Company for 27 years and is currently responsible for System Restoration and Emergency Preparedness, Distribution Engineering, Vegetation Management, Training and Corporate Training.

“I believe God works in mysterious ways and he has called upon us to love and help our neighbors in their time of need,” says Ahern. “Multiple sclerosis is a debilitating disease affecting the central nervous system and there is currently no cure. Those who are battling the effects of MS need our help and I truly believe this is one way to answer God’s call: by helping raise funds to find a cure for this devastating disease.”

Ahern is a registered professional engineer in Connecticut and is a member of Tau Beta Pi’s, National Engineering Honor Society. Ahern has also served as the Campaign Chairman of the Northeast Utilities: United Way Campaign and United Arts Council Campaign in 2007, and is involved with his local church.

Established by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Connecticut Chapter in 2000, MS Corporate Achievers is a recognition program honoring some of Connecticut’s most influential leaders while at the same time raising critically needed funds to ensure ongoing scientific research and the continuation of vital programs and services offered by the chapter to the more than 6,000 Connecticut residents diagnosed with MS. Honorees are nominated by their peers and selected by an advisory council board for making outstanding contributions to business, civic and cultural enrichment.

Through participation, honorees join an elite leadership network sharing a commitment to making Connecticut a better place in which to live. Since 2000 honorees have raised nearly $550,000 to help end the devastating effects of multiple sclerosis.

“Mr. Ahern is truly an effective leader throughout his community,” said Lisa Gerrol, Connecticut Chapter president and chief professional officer. “He is committed to raising funds in the fight against MS and devoted to elevating life within the Hartford region, his hometown of Old Saybrook and the state.”
