Bristol Agency Honored As Outstanding Community Partner

BRISTOL, Conn. — Connecticut Community Care Inc. (CCCI) of Bristol, Conn., was named Outstanding Community Partner at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Connecticut Chapter Awards Ceremony and Annual Meeting earlier this month. The event took place at the Hartford Marriott Rocky Hill.

"We were very pleased to receive the Outstanding Community Partner Award in recognition of our extraordinary partnership with the National MS Society," said CCCI president Molly Rees Gavin. "We are committed to continuing to provide excellent support to individuals with multiple sclerosis across the state."

CCCIMore than 6,000 Connecticut residents live with the baffling effects of multiple sclerosis, a chronic and often disabling disease of the central nervous system. There currently is no cure. Symptoms can include, among other things, numbness in the limbs, difficulties with vision and speech, stiffness and, in some more severe cases, total paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot be predicted. The National MS Society, Connecticut Chapter and CCCI have partnered for more than five years, providing assessments and care management statewide for clients of all ages.

Connecticut Community Care Inc. — through its private division, Care Management Associates (CMA) — offers care-management services for clients referred by the Connecticut Chapter. The intent is to increase clients’ independence, help them remain in the community, and improve their quality of life.

In the past year CMA served more than 50 individuals with multiple sclerosis, many with complex medical and social needs. Care Management Associates care managers help locate support services for the regular activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, taking medications, transportation, finding appropriate housing and caregiver respite.

"The support of organizations like CCCI is invaluable in the fight against this incurable disease," said Lynette Coleman, associate vice president of programs and services for the Connecticut Chapter. "The dedication, commitment and determination of CCCI’s staff members make them more than deserving of this special recognition."

Chapter president Lisa Gerrol handed out 17 awards at the annual meeting, March 2. Joyce Nelson, president and CEO of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, gave the keynote speech.
