News Channel 8 Meteorologist “Dr. Mel” To Lace Up & Step Out With Cheshire!

NEW HAVEN, Conn. Award-winning meteorologist Mel Goldstein, Ph.D., “Dr. Mel” is ready to lace up and step out with Cheshire for the 2007 Travelers MS Walk, presented by UnitedHealth Group, on Sunday, April 22.

So fascinated with weather he started a meteorology club in 8th grade, today, Dr. Mel is the chief meteorologist at WTNH News Channel 8, where he has been providing up-to-date weather forecasts for more than 20 years.

Since 2000, News Channel 8 has teamed up with the chapter to help promote the MS Walk. The Greater Connecticut Chapter MS Walk has raised more than $1 million each year for the past four years. As media sponsor, WTNH News Channel 8 has provided valuable event exposure and publicity through public service announcements (PSA), news stories related to MS, morning show interviews with event coordinators and participants and event day coverage. dr_mel

“Here at News Channel 8, we’re involved in many different charities,” said morning news anchor Darren Kramer, who has been named grand marshal for this year’s walk event. “The MS walk event has been special to me and my family. I like to think that it helps both the chapter and the station that I know a little bit of what it’s like to live with multiple sclerosis.

There are more than 6,000 Connecticut residents diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, an oftentimes debilitating disease affecting the central nervous system. The cause of MS is unknown, and, as a result, there currently is no cure for multiple sclerosis. Funds raised through chapter events, such as the MS Walk events, ensure the continuation of scientific research to find a cure and provide for vital programs and services offered by the chapter to Connecticut residents diagnosed with MS.

The 2007 Travelers MS Walk will take place at eight Connecticut sites, including Cheshire, Clinton, Enfield, New London, Manchester, Simsbury, West Hartford and West Haven, on Sunday, April 22, and at a ninth site in Woodstock, Conn., on April 29. The Cheshire walk event will take place at Cheshire High School. Check-in and registration begin at 8 a.m. Participants will step out at 9 a.m. Lunch is provided by Subway and Coca-Cola.
