Plantsville Residents Named 2006 Volunteers Of The Year

PLANTSVILLE, Conn. The National MS Society, Greater Connecticut Chapter named at its recent Annual Meeting  Plantsville, Conn., residents Barbara Roucoulet and Sally Martin as the 2006 Programs Volunteers of the Year. The award ceremony and annual meeting was held at the Hartford Marriott in Rocky Hill, Conn., on Sunday, March 4.

“Ms. Roucoulet and Ms. Martin have had a relationship with the National MS Society for nearly 20 years,” said Susan Raimondo, community programs director. “Ms. Roucoulet’s daughter was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis shortly after graduating from high school, and the effects of her disease now confine her to a wheelchair. Soon after, Ms. Roucoulet and Ms. Martin began volunteering for the MS Walk and MS Bike Tour, and they have also been an important part of the registration process at the West Hartford MS Walk site.”

Most recently, Roucoulet and Martin donated their time, materials, energy and creativity by sewing more than 200 brightly patterned hand-sewn wheelchair bags, which were given as gifts to nursing home residents with MS.

There are more than 6,000 Connecticut residents diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), an oftentimes debilitating disease affecting the central nervous system. The cause is unknown, and, as a result, there currently is no cure for MS.

Funds raised through chapter events, such as the upcoming 2007 Travelers MS Walk, presented by UnitedHealth Group, in April, ensure the continuation of scientific research to find a cure and provide for vital programs and services offered by the chapter to Connecticut residents diagnosed with MS.
